The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is targeting students, especially in government colleges or universities in its voters’ education and registration fair series, an official said on Monday, May 6.
Jason Orbita, Comelec-Negros Oriental communications focal person and concurrent election officer of Valencia town, said the voters’ education is set on Wednesday, May 8, at the Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) in Dumaguete City.
The same activity was held on Monday at the Siquijor State College in nearby Siquijor province, with Comelec chairman George Erwin Garcia in attendance.
Garcia will also attend the NORSU activity and is expected to speak to the students.
“The voters’ education and registration fair is being done all over the country and we have speakers from the education and information department and they will be lecturing on voters’ rights and responsibilities,” Orbita said.
Many students are first-time voters, thus the need to educate them on their right of suffrage and there will also be an onsite registration area for those who would want to register, he added.
Orbita said another highlight of the activity is the “register anywhere” program of the Comelec, where students coming from outside of Negros Oriental are allowed to register. (PNA)
