The Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) is open to conduct talks with the family of suspected New People’s Army (NPA) member Jose Caramihan who was killed during last week’s encounters at Barangay Pinapugasan in Negros Occidental’s Escalante City.

Lt. Colonel J-jay Javines, 3ID spokesperson, said their doors are open to Caramihan’s surviving kin, who strongly denied that their father was a member of the communist insurgents, and insisted that he was only a farmer.

They are also open to hold talks with the residents.

Caramihan’s death is currently being investigated by the Commission on Human Rights, alongside the death of Emaren Pastidio, the lone female fatality, an alleged high-ranking NPA member.

Meanwhile, Pastidio’s case will ascertain whether her rights, as recognized by the Gender and Development Ombud under the Magna Carta of Women, have been violated.

Following the ninth encounter in the series of clashes last Monday, February 26, government forces have seized a total of 16 firearms.

As the seizure gathered some questions, Javines explained that some confiscated firearms may have belonged to residents who are NPA sympathizers.

Other weapons were owned by the fleeing rebels./DGB, WDJ
