Jovelyn Gonzaga had a triumphant return for the Cignal HD Spikers as they scored a come-from-behind 18-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-22 win over the Petro Gazz Angels in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Invitational at the San Juan Arena on Tuesday night, June 27.

Gonzaga, who transferred from Army Lady Troopers during the offseason, made her presence felt for the HD Spikers with 13 points, including 11 attacks, for a winning start in the mid-season conference.

The Guimaras-native said she feels fulfilled to be able to return to HD Spikers, but admitted to still be struggling with the system of head coach Shaq delos Santos as she only joined the squad a few weeks ago.

“Sobrang fulfilling na makalaro uli [sa Cignal]. I’m so excited. Though medyo nag-struggle sa first set, I told myself that I needed to step up,” Gonzaga, who recently represented the Philippine women’s beach volleyball team in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games, said.

For his part, Delos Santos credited his veteran players as well as newcomer Vanessa Gandler for staying in the system as they managed to clinch the victory despite dropping the opening sets.

“I just reminded them that we needed to execute our plays,” Delos Santos said.

“We actually came into the match ready against Petro. Medyo nag-struggle lang nung umpisa but after a while, gumanda na ang service at receive namin,” he added.

Frances Xinia Molina led the way for Cignal with 22 points, Roselyn Doria added 12 hits, Marivic Meneses scored 11 points, while Gandler registered eight points in her PVL debut.

Meanwhile, defending champions Creamline Cool Smashers displayed their vaunted firepower as they scored a 25-22, 25-22, 25-17 victory over revamped Chery Tiggo Crossovers.

Diana Carlos tallied 24 points, including 21 attack points and three blocks, while Jessica Galanza scored 10 hits and two aces as the Cool Smashers took an early 1-0 lead in Group A.

In the first game, F2 Logistics Cargo Movers flaunted its depth and experience to sweep newcomer Farm Fresh Foxies, 25-22, 25-20, 25-23. Ivy Lacsina top-scored with 13 points for the Cargo Movers./ASC, WDJ
