Iloilo Kisela Knights reached the Southern Division finals of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) GM Wesley So Cup after defeating Camarines Soaring Eagle in two sets on Saturday night.
The Kisela Knights struggled in the first set of their two-set Southern Division semifinals match with the Soaring Eagle as both teams ended at 10.5-10.5 all to force an “Armageddon.”
In the “Armageddon,” the Kisela Knights was defeated by the Soaring Eagle, 2-1, with only Karl Victor Ochoa registering victory, while Hovhannes Gabuzyan and Joey Antonio losing.
The Kisela Knights, however, bounced back in the second set with a 12.5-8.5 triumph over the Soaring Eagle forcing another “Armageddon” to determine which team will reach the Southern Division finals.
In the final “Armageddon,” the Kisela Knights prevailed over the Soaring Eagle, 2-1, courtesy of triumphs by Gabuzyan in the Board 2 and Ochoa in Board 3. Antonio bowed in his Board 1 match.
“Great comeback for Iloilo Kisela Knights. We won together as a team as one cover each other,” said Kisela Knights team owner Leo Sotaridona. “Our tension-filled game against the Camarines showed how teamwork makes a difference.”
The Kisela Knights moved on to the Southern Division finals on July 28 against Cordova Dutchess Dagami Warriors, which defeated the Iloilo City-based squad in their two encounters in the preliminary round.
The Southern Division top-seed Dagami Warriors reached the division finale after defeating No. 4 ranked Negros Kingsmen in their two-leg division semifinals on Saturday evening.
The Dagami Warriors first scored a 13.5-7.5 victory over the Kingsmen in the first set of Southern Division semifinals before repeating with a 12-9 triumph in the second set.
Meanwhile, in the Northern Division, Laguna Heroes entered the division finals with a win over Manila Indios Bravos, while San Juan Predators edged Antipolo Predators in two sets./ASC, WDJ
