Negros Kingsmen sweep PCAP foes

Negros Kingsmen bucked the absence of reinforcement Steven Breckenridge to sweep their two matches in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) GM Wesley So Cup on Saturday night, July 10.

The Kingsmen opened the evening with a close 11.5-9.5 victory over Toledo City Trojans before following it up with a 16-5 domination over Palawan Queen’s Gambit as they remained at fourth spot in Southern Division with 22-11 win-loss slate.

The Kingsmen were held to a draw by Toledo City in blitz game with only Jason Bandal (Board 1), Junaico Segismar (Board 6) and Adrian dela Cruz (Board 7) winning and Rolzon Roullo (Board 4) settling for draw.

The Kingsmen, however, were able to bounce back against the Trojans in rapid event via wins by Rosendo Bandal Jr. (Board 4), Segismar (Board 6) and Dela Cruz (Board 7) and draws by Randy Segarra (Board 2) and Rowelyn Acedo (Board 3).

Negros was more dominant in blitz game against Palawan with victories by Acedo (Board 3), Bandal Jr. (Board 4), Roullo (Board 5) and Segismar (Board 6) and draws by Bandal (Board 1) and Segarra (Board 2).

The Kingsmen also ruled over Queen’s Gambit in rapid event behind wins by Segarra (Board 2), Acedo (Board 3), Roullo (Board 5), Segismar (Board 6), and Dela Cruz (Board 7) and draw by Bandal (Board 1).

Kingsmen co-team owner Carlo Fontelo said that the twin victories were huge for the team as they hope to maintain the fourth place in the Southern Division heading into the playoffs round.

“These are morale boosting victories for us as we are close to the playoffs round,” Fontelo said. “The target is for the team is to stay at fourth spot in the standings with still a game left in our schedule.”

Iloilo Kisela Knights, meanwhile, split their matches as they suffered a 12-9 defeat to Camarines Soaring Eagle before bouncing back with a 20-1 annihilation of Cebu City Machers for a 26-7 record.

The Kisela Knights walloped the Machers in blitz game behind Hovhannes Gabuzyan (Board 1), Karl Viktor Ochoa (Board 2), Fiona Geeweneth Guirhem (Board 3), Cesar Mariano (Board 4), John Michael Silvederio (Board 5), Fritz Bryan Porras (Board 6), and Mark Jossel Mariano (Board 7).

Iloilo also ruled the rapid game behind Gabuzyan (Board 1), Joey Antonio Jr. (Board 2), Cherry Ann Mejia (Board 3), Cesar Mariano (Board 4), Silvederio (Board 5), and Porras (Board 6) and a draw by Dennis Bernas (Board 7)./ASC, WDJ
