The Visayan Maritime Academy Civic Action Group for Emergency Response Services (VMA CAGERS) recently celebrated their 20th year as a local civic group. The association has been consistent in their role as an advocacy group for campus safety by providing emergency and rescue services. They also foster friendship and camaraderie among students, along with faculty and staff.
20 years ago, the group was founded by former VMA Community Extension Services Coordinator and Safety officer, Engr. Ferdinand M. Turbanos, in response to a mandate set by VMA Global College & Training Centers Inc. president, Dr. Elizabeth O. Salabas.
“The progress of the organization was overwhelming,” Salabas said. “With any organization, success depends on unified commitment and the VMA CAGERS have noble intentions and remain an asset – the pride of the school – as far as promoting voluntary service, which is worth emulating.”
“The main thrust is to ensure the community is safe and-the most important thing – solidarity among members, along with serving as a model and inspiration to those individuals who feel and realize the importance of overcoming challenges and success they enjoyed,“ she added.
She congratulated the organization, particularly the founder.
After 46 students successfully completed the Negros Rescue Federation first responder basic course conducted in 2001, VMA CAGERS have engaged in emergency, medical, and rescue services; disaster preparedness training programs; environmental development projects; and an Adopt-a-Mangrove program.
Additionally, their safety program has organized fire drill exercises, along with search and rescue operations; and offered support for the College National Services Training Program and Community Welfare Training Services.
Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary chairman and president Martin Dale Yogore, who serves as an adviser to the VMA CAGERS, said: “People not involved in any volunteer movement may question our existence and ask about our purpose, why we are here and what do we gain? One thing I can say is – join us to feel us.”/WDJ
