Far Eastern University (FEU) opened the 82nd UAAP women’s volleyball season with a 25-9, 25-20, 25-17 sweep of the University of the East (UE) yesterday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. Angel Cayuna, who was named “Player of the Match,” finished with eight points and 18 excellent sets for FEU.
FEU set the tone early with an 8-3 edge following a hit by Ivana Agudo. Their lead further grew to 16-4 and resulted with an easy first set triumph.
Into the second set, UE kept pace with their opponents, down 16-14; however, hits from Czarina Carandang and Zen Perolino gave FEU a 2-0 set edge.
FEU were slow at the start of the third, trailing 11-9, but Cayuna and Jeanette Villareal gave FEU the upperhand, with the former closing the match with two service aces.
On the men’s side, FEU scored a 25-10, 25-22, 25-23 win over UE. JJ Javelona, a rookie from FEU’s high school program, spearheaded the charge with 11 points; followed by Peter Quiel contributing 10; and Jude Garcia adding nine./ASC, WDJ
