An injured owl was turned over yesterday morning by three teenagers after it was discovered in EB Magalona’s Barangay Alicante. EB Magalona municipal police chief, Police Captain Wilfredo Benoman, Jr., said the animal was identified as an eastern grass owl.
He said, based on information received, the said species of owl is normally found in eastern, southern, and southeast Asia; as well as parts of New Guinea, Australia, and the western Pacific region.
According to Birdlife Australia, the owl typically lives in marshy areas, farmland, canefields, among other similar environments
The species is also known for its long legs and strong feet.
Benoman added, the owl was immediately turned over to the locality’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) office.
Recently, dead green sea turtles, which are considered endangered, have been found across the Western Visayas. A female turtle was discovered along the shores of resort island Boracay last month, while another one turned up in Cauayan the following week.
The turtle found in Boracay was already in a state of decomposition with its organs detached and a slice found along its carapace, which may have been caused by the propellers of a boat or ship. Meanwhile, the turtle found in Cauayan was already severely decomposed.
“Our Department always supports the protection and conservation of our marine animals,” stated DENR-Region VI Executive Director Francisco E. Milla, Jr. “I encourage all to stop throwing garbage into oceans that slowly but surely kill our marine animals especially turtles.”/DGB, WDJ
