The Creamline Cool Smashers won Game 1 of the 2019 Premier Volleyball League Open Conference finals with a 25-14, 25-22, 27-25 sweep over the PetroGazz Angels earlier this week at the San Juan Arena.
Alyssa Valdez tallied 19 points on 17 kills and two aces for Creamline.
After an easy first set, the Cool Smashers were down by five in the second before going on a run for a 24-21 edge. Despite Jessica Galanza committing an attack error, she eventually made up for it with a hit to take the set.
Late in the third set, Valdez scored three straight points, including back-to-back aces, to turn a 22-20 deficit into a 23-22 advantage. The Angels managed to stay alive by forcing a 25-25 deadlock; however, an error, coupled with a hit by Galanza, gave the win to Creamline.
“This is the finals, we expect nothing but all-out game from both teams,” Valdez said. “PetroGazz really showed it from the get-go.”
Meanwhile, the BanKo Perlas Spikers scored a 25-23, 25-23, 25-18 sweep over the Motolite Power Builders in the battle for third place./ASC, WDJ
