The Colegio de San Juan de Letran survived a late run to score an 85-80 win over San Sebastian College-Recoletos (SSC-R) in the first round of the 95th NCAA men’s basketball semifinals at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
After seeing its 77-63 advantage trimmed to 81-80 late in the final quarter, a basket from King Caralipio and free throws by Fran Yu helped Letran escape with the win.
Jerrick Balanza scored 15 points for Letran; while Edson Batiller added 14; and Yu contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
“In the end, a win is a win,” said Letran head coach Bonnie Tan.
The winner next advances to the second round.
