Gilas Pilipinas looks to
secure Olympic berth

After failing to advance to the second round of the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup, the Philippine men’s national basketball team, Gilas Pilipinas, will be looking to secure qualification to the 2020 Summer Olympics through the upcoming World Cup classification round at the Wukesong Arena in Beijing, China.
The highest-ranking Asian team aside from Japan, who is hosting next year’s Summer Olympics, will earn a spot in next year’s events.
“It’s hard to think about the Olympics at this point; I don’t want to speculate about the Olympics,” said Gilas head coach Joseller ‘Yeng’ Guiao. “I think China has an inside track already [after winning one of their two games].”
The Philippines, meanwhile, finished 0-3.
If Gilas fails to qualify for the Olympics during the World Cup, there is another qualifying tournament scheduled for early next year.
“We have to think about [Olympics qualification] and prepare,” the coach added. “There are a lot of factors that will come in and there are a lot of factors that we cannot control—we have to be ready.”
