Dave Peñalosa of San Carlos City failed to clinch the World Boxing Council silver featherweight title over the weekend after falling via unanimous decision against South African boxer Lerato Dlamin at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The loss was a first for the Negrense fighter.
Despite being out of the ring for 10 months, Dlamini did not show any signs of rustiness, using “hit-and-run” tactics in the early rounds, which allowed him to gain an early advantage. Peñalosa tried to rally but unable to do so with the South African running circles are the ring.
The judges awarded Dlamini the win with a lopsided 119-107, 118-108, 117-109 decision.
The 28-year-old Peñalosa saw his boxing record drop to 15-1-0, including 11 stoppage wins; while Dlamini improved to a 13-1-0 record, with six victories by stoppages./ASC, WDJ
