The suspect in the killing of a seven-year-old girl, whose remains were recently found inside a bag in Victorias City, was arrested earlier this week in Iloilo. According to deputy Victorias City police chief, Police Captain Joy Ellaga, the suspect, identified as Mark Besa, was nabbed by the Ajuy Municipal Police Station.
Based on a follow-up investigation, the suspect reportedly fled following the murder and stole a fishing boat, which he used to cross the Panay Gulf, eventually arriving in Barotac Viejo. Once back on land, he boarded a bus towards Ajuy, where he hid with relatives.
An alert was issued to officials in Iloilo upon reports the suspect was no longer in Negros, which led the Ajuy municipal police to track down the suspect.
Besa’s uncle, Napoleon, was also arrested for harboring a suspect and failing to notify police.
Following the arrest, Victorias City police took custody of Besa and brought him back to Negros Occidental, where he was met with angry residents who had surrounded the city police station. According to Victorias City police chief, Police Lt. Colonel Eduardo Corpuz, the suspect has not admitted to the crime but noted, if Besa escapes, that is an indication he was responsible for the killing.
Meanwhile, the results of an autopsy were released that showed the victim had been raped. The victim’s face also showed evidence of abuse, along with their neck being forcefully twisted.
Examiners concluded the victim’s cause of death was due to severe head injury caused by blunt force trauma.
The suspect is presently detained at the Victorias City Police Station./DGB, WDJ
