Veterans of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) are set to bolster the league’s newest addition, the Iloilo United Royals. According to Royals head coach Eric Gonzales, former Navotas Clutch players Samboy de Leon, Rey Publico, Jay Javelosa, and Donald Gumaru will serve as the squad’s core.
“Our squad might be young compared to other teams but we are determined to make an impact right in our first season,” he said.
Also joining the team are former Valenzuela Classic swingman Ryan Arambulo and Ilonggo player Aaron Jeruta, who used to place for the San Juan Knights.
Team owner Julio Jalandoni Javelosa earlier announced other names on the Iloilo roster including Rhagnee Sinco, Paul Reguera, and Andrei Pantin.
In addition, the coaching staff includes Nash Racela, who has won UAAP and Southeast Asia Basketball Association titles as a coach.
The team was formed after a signing took place last week between Jalandoni Javelosa; MPBL founder, Senator Manny Pacquiao; and Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes at the Makati Shangri-La.
“Currently, we have 16 players [on] the team,” said Jalandoni Javelosa. “We are still in negotiations with some players.”
Iloilo previously participated in the Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) in 1998. Racela also won an MBA title after coaching the Batangas Blades.
