under ‘Category Red’

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Negros Occidental has placed Himamaylan City under “Category Red,” which considers the locality an area of grave concern. Earlier this month, the chief of police for Moises Padilla confirmed the Comelec categorized the town as a “red area.”
Comelec-Negros Occidental supervisor, Atty. Salud Milagros Villanueva, said the designation was made due to an intense political rivalry in Himamaylan City as well as a New People’s Army presence.
She also noted, several areas have been placed under “orange status,” which signifies the presence of armed groups, including Toboso, Isabela, Hinoba-an, and Kabankakan City.
In addition, 13 localities have been placed under “Category Yellow,” or areas of concern, including Calatrava, Don Salvador Benedicto, Escalante City, EB Magalona, Silay City, Binalbagan, Hinigaran, La Castellana, Candoni, Cauayan, Ilog, Sipalay City, and San Carlos City.
Bacolod City, meanwhile, is one of 13 areas under “Category Green,” which signifies there is no longer a security concern.
In terms of overall violations, Villanueva said the posting of campaign materials has made for the highest number of infractions. Although, she noted, the number of violations is lower as compared to previous elections./DGB, WDJ
