Frank Fernandez – an alleged spokesman of the National Democratic Front (NDF) in Negros Island – was arrested in Liliw town in Laguna.

Members of the Philippine Army and Philippine National Police (PNP) nabbed Fernandez around 5:16 a.m. on Sunday, March 24.

The authorities also arrested his wife Cleofe, who was believed to also have ties with the communist movement.

The couple’s apprehension was staged on the strength of an arrest warrant.

The PNP said Fernandez – who is known for his multiple aliases, like Ibarra, Ago, Suilo, and Kanor – faces charges for four counts of murder and attempted murder.

He and his wife’s arrest came two days after President Rodrigo Duterte permanently canceled peace talks with the communist rebels in the country.

The NDF is the political arm of the Communist Party of the Philippines.
