In commemoration of the day the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations, December 10 is recognized as Human Rights Day. The historic declaration recognized the “inalienable rights which everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being – regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status.”

2018 marks the 70th anniversary of the declaration signing.

The UN considered human rights the “heart” of their sustainable development goals.

The day also marks the end of 16 days of activism, which began after last month’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women observance./WDJ
