The Bacolod City Sangguniang Panlungsod recently passed a resolution endorsing Senate Bill 2034, which seeks to raise the minimum monthly wage for teachers to P28,000 and non-teaching personnel to P16,000.
The resolution, authored by City Councilor Wilson Gamboa, Jr., quotes the bill, noting, “Public school teachers play a significant role in educating the Filipino youth who turn become the future leaders of the country.”
The endorsement also said an increased minimum wage would “negate the image of the teacher as poor and buried in debt.”
The bill, penned by Senator Nancy Binay, cites the 1987 Philippine Constitution, stating, “The State shall promote a just and dynamic social order that will ensure the prosperity and independence o f the nation and free the people from poverty.”/WDJ
