From October 1 to 7, the Philippines observes Elderly Filipino Week to ensure the public is aware of the basic necessities, along with various development opportunities, older people seek.
The observance is in line with Presidential Proclamation 470, signed in 1994 by then-President Fidel V. Ramos.
In the order, he states, “The increasing population of elderly persons is entitled to adequate food, shelter, clothing, and health care and should be provided with opportunities for livelihood, family, and community support and self-help.”
“Elderly persons should, likewise, have access to appropriate educational and training programs, either as participants or as resource providers, considering their wealth of experience and capabilities,” the policy added.
The proclamation was signed in response to the growing senior citizen population./WDJ
