The Mines and Geosciences Bureau recently ordered a temporary halt to operations at quarries located in Bacolod City Barangays Alangilan and Granada following the deadly landslides that killed 56 people in Naga City, Cebu.
According to Bacolod Social Action Center head, Rev. Fr. Chris Gonzales, the suspension was also ordered due to “over-extraction;” however, he was unable to confirm if operations were indeed halted.
He noted, a public forum regarding the matter was held last week, with another scheduled in Barangay Alangilan today.
The said quarries have been the subject of protest since 2010 surrounding alleged destruction to the local environment. Local operators were also accused of non-compliance with government rehabilitation conditions./DGB, WDJ
