“…Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms…” –Ephesians 6:11-12
You are familiar with American billionaire Kate Spade, right? She produced handbags and other personal items that sold like hotcakes worldwide. She went on to sell the company that carried her name, a billion dollar enterprise established by Spade and her family.
She committed suicide last Tuesday, June 5, inside her New York City mansion, where she left a suicide note for her young daughter, saying goodbye and assuring the young girl that she had nothing to do with her mother’s passing.
The family has since disclosed Spade had contracted a mental illness and was suffering for the past 10 years, following the sale of her business for $4 billion.
How is it possible such a rich woman could be so gravely afflicted with mental illness to the point it compelled the fashion icon to take her own life?
Mental illness afflicts many worldwide, including the Philippines
After news broke of Spade’s suicide, news media have been reporting on the number of people afflicted worldwide with mental illness – millions upon millions of Filipinos included. Those who found the courage to admit their illness had the opportunity to seek treatment. However, those who refused to acknowledge their situation, primarily from fear of ridicule, were deprived of such medical attention and were not equipped to combat the ailment.
What causes mental illness?
There are plenty of causes. Imbibing of too much alcohol and indulging in illegal drugs are the most recognized origins, but such a sickness can also be inherited. There is also one other item to consider, mental aberration is one of God’s curses.
Mental illness from refusing to obey the Bible
The Bible’s position on mental illness is very clear. According to Deuteronomy 28:15 and 28, once a person no longer listens to or obeys God’s commands, He will curse them, which includes madness and confusion.
The Bible does not clearly explain why madness or confusion are applied to certain individuals but, based on God’s commands, I believe it is because these people are no longer with God. The devil, or “the spirit of darkness,” gained a foothold in their minds. As God keeps away from those who stray from His commands, the devil is who draws closer.
The Bible also provides many warnings. In Ephesians 6:12, when the “heavenly realms, or one’s thoughts, are inhabited by “spiritual forces of darkness,” urging one to commit sin, how does one fight it? In the prior passage, Ephesians 6:11, one must wear “the full armor of God” – sincere faith, truthful prayer, and sharing the word of God.
