Despite the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) earlier appealing for the public to not carry weapons during the ongoing 25th Panaad sa Negros Festival, a man was arrested at the festival grounds entrance last Saturday evening for wielding several bladed weapons.
Police identified the suspect as 39-year-old Alex Mendis, a resident of La Salle Ville Subdivision in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City.
BCPO spokesperson, Police Senior Inspector Armilyn Vargas, said Mendis, who was believed to be under the influence of alcohol, tried to enter the festival grounds.
However, Mendis was barred from entry and was arrested after police, who after frisking him, recovered a 10-inch jungle knife and a 12-inch scythe from his possession.
Mendis is presently detained at Police Station 7 and faces charges in violation of City Ordinance 358 for possession of a deadly weapon and in violation of the Commission on Elections gun ban./DGB, WDJ
