Boat captain Rogelio Reyes of the fishing boat Rosal and Mario Artillero, owner of the fishing boat Marc Ivan, were yesterday brought up on charges before the Iloilo Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.

Reyes, who was caught using a Danish seine, a type of banned fishing net used for commercial fishing, often referred to as hulbot-hulbot, by the Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force last month, faces charges in violation of RA 10654, or the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998.

Artillero, meanwhile, was brought up on frustrated homicide, assaulting a law enforcement official, and disobedience for trying to evade arrest after he was caught using a gillnet, locally referred to as “palupad,” which is prohibited.

He was also brought up on charges in violation of RA 10654 and Fisheries Administrative Order 167-3, which bans fishing for herring, sardines, and mackerel during a portion of the year.

Both fishermen were caught in the waters of Ajuy, Iloilo./JAN, WDJ
