Over 1.4M gather for Grand Parade
By Paulo Loreto Lim
Based on data gathered by Police Regional Office-7 (PRO-7) as of 3:00 p.m. last Sunday, over 1.4 million revelers were gathered along the Sinulog 2018 Grand Parade route.
According to Sinulog Executive Committee chairman, Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, the parade began along New Imus Road and meandered through the city until arriving at the Cebu City Sports Complex, where a final presentation took place.
Among the safety precautions undertaken during the event included the previously reported liquor ban, which prohibited liquor within a 300-meter radius of the parade tour, along with a shut down of mobile phone services between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. that days.
Reports affirmed service was fully restored by 9:00 p.m.
PRO-7 director, Police Chief Superintendent Robert Quenery, reported no major incidents during the events on Sunday. A contrast to last year, where crowds of intoxicated revelers damaged vehicles and poured beer on others who were gathered for the festivities. Those altercations prompted Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña to order the liquor ban.
Meanwhile, Parokya ni Edgar performed that evening, as part of the annual Kalingawan sa Plaza, in the city’s Plaza Independencia.
Despite the festival coming to a close, the Sinulog Street Fair, which takes place along Osmeña Boulevard, remains open until January 31./PLL, WDJ
