After the Sandiganbayan Seventh Division suspended Iloilo Lone District Rep. Jerry Treñas for 90 days amid graft charges in relation to a P500,000 donation from Senator Loren Legarda, intended for the construction of the Iloilo Press Club building during his tenure as Iloilo City mayor, the congressman said he does not intend on appealing the decision.
Despite his acceptance of the penalty, he called the decision by the court “unfair .”
The congressman’s legal counsel, Atty. JJ Justiniano, earlier denied the allegations.
Following the Sandiganbayan decision, the Commission on Audit (COA) also ordered Treñas and dismissed Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog to refund P46.4 million after their productivity enhancement incentive (PEI) for 2009 had been disallowed.
Mabilog was serving as vice mayor at the time.
The funding for the press club structure was released in two batches, the first in December 2003 and the second in January 2004; however, the building was not constructed until 2011, after Treñas was already out of office, with the project financed by Rommel Ynion./PLL, WDJ
