Fishermen from Roxas City in Capiz were arrested over the weekend by the Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force for fishing with a gillnet, locally referred to as “palupad,” off the coast of Concepcion in Iloilo.
According to Senior Police Office 1 (SPO1) Gilbert Piedad of the provincial Bantay Dagat, the fishermen were caught fishing 15-kilometers off the coast, which is a violation of RA 10654, or the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998.
Boat captain Rodelo Artillero of Barangay Dumolog, Roxas City; his crew; and gear were apprehended.
Among the items seized included the boat, an engine, shafting, propeller and rudder, a trawl net, and their catch.
Meanwhile, three others on board, identified as Joel Losanes, Jaime Lacson, and Wilfredo Rabino, all residents of Barangay Alipata, Carles in Iloilo, were apprehended on obstruction charges after allegedly trying to interrupt the Bantay Dagat operation.
