Sancho cites hikes in fuel prices

By Dominique Gabriel G. Bañaga

Local labor group, the General Alliance of Workers Association (GAWA), yesterday announced they are currently mulling the idea of petitioning the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board-Region VI (RTWPB-6) for higher wages.

According to GAWA Secretary-General Wennie Sancho, “unabated increases in the price of petroleum products” have created the need for wage increases.

He explained, if the upsurge in the price of oil continues, it will constitute an increase in the price of transportation costs and other commodities, such as food.

Sancho added, if the government starts imposing excise taxes on fuel, it would further erode workers’ purchasing power.

Earlier this year, the Central Negros Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Ceneco) disqualified Sancho as a candidate in the co-op’s District 4 election, citing his failure to produce certification from the RTWPB-6, where he is affiliated.

The labor leader later explained, “I am an ex-officio already, as a labor representative to the RTWPB in Region 6.”/DGB, WDJ
