A police officer who was absent without official leave (AWOL) was killed, while an active duty police officer and his son were wounded in a shooting incident at Rosario-Yulo Streets, Barangay 14, Bacolod City, Saturday night.
Police identified the fatality as Police Officer 1 (PO1) Federico Nicolas, last assigned to the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO); and the wounded as PO1 Wilmer Bansag, assigned to the Negros Occidental Police Office (NOPPO), and his 17-year-old son, who authorities have not named.
Reports released by police said the victims were seen riding on a vehicle driven by PO1 Nicolas, near the Education and Training Center School-1 (ETCS-1), when they encountered the unknown suspects riding a white Toyota Vios who shot at them multiple times.
According to investigators, there were about seven to eight suspects wearing bonnets, who may have been specifically waiting for the victims, that got away in two runaway vehicles.
PO1 Nicolas was declared dead on arrival at Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH), while PO1 Bansag is in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center (BAMC), due to a deep gunshot wound to his molar.
PO1 Bansag’s son is currently being treated at BAMC after receiving wounds on his leg.
Recovered from the crime scene were 30 bullet casings of different caliber of firearms, among them were 9mm, 5.57 armalite, and .45 caliber.
Police are still investigating the motive into the shooting./WDJ
