The Iloilo Provincial Board recently passed an ordinance creating the Iloilo Province Multi-Sectoral STI, HIV, and AIDS Prevention and Control Council.
According to Board Member Paul Bryant Biron, “With this ordinance, we can hopefully provide solutions, control, and prevention measures.”
Recent data shows, from January 1984 until February 2017, there have been a reported 313 HIV/AIDS cases in the province.
Last year, Dr. Elvie Villalobos of the Department of Health-Region VI (DOH-6) called on local government units to create HIV/AIDS councils. In response, Iloilo City, Roxas City, and Bacolod City have each established such councils.
Villalobos blamed politics for the lack of additional HIV/AIDS councils in the region./WDJ
