During the recent Visayan Sea Summit on Sicogon Island, part of Carles, Iloilo, Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr. pitched the idea of a crab hatchery, currently utilized in his province, to Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Sr., as a means of reviving crab production.

Provincial Administrator Raul Banias said Provincial Agriculturist Ildefonso Toledo will send an aquaculture, or aquafarming, team to Escalante City, home to a hatchery where one host crab is said to produce one million eggs.
Fishermen along the coastal towns of Iloilo often prematurely harvest undersized blue crabs, negatively impacting the local crab population./WDJ
