Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) acting director, Police Senior Superintdent Jack Wanky, yesterday confirmed a group of evacuees fleeing conflict-stricken Marawi City arrived in Bacolod City.
In a text message, Wanky said he does not yet have a number of the number of arrivals.
He pointed out, many are currently seeking refuge with family already living in the city.
In response to the development, Wanky issued an order to all police station chiefs in the city to validate the report and to screen all evacuees to ensure they are not members of any terrorist organizations.
The order, however, contradicts Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOPPO) acting director, Police Senior Superintendent Rodolfo Castil, who, earlier this week, said barangay officials are in charge of screening those entering their respective jurisdictions.
“They can check if their purpose is either just visiting a relative or if they’re there to conduct business,” he explained. “They have to search for the necessary permits or papers.”
Wanky also ordered law enforcement units to closely coordinate with local Muslim leaders while profiling and monitoring the evacuees.
Earlier, the BCPO chief said they are fully prepared for the arrival of individuals evacuating Marawi City and indicated they are welcome to temporarily relocate in the city./WDJ
