According to Bacolod Lone District Rep. Greg Gasataya, the House of Representative, through the House Committee on Agriculture and Food, will hold a congressional hearing on high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) on May 16.
Gasataya previously filed a resolution seeking an inquiry into the importation of HFCS, saying the practice has caused “adverse effects to the Philippine sugarcane industry.”
In addition, he projected, if importation continued, “Poverty and hunger will result to turmoil causing chaos.”
The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) and other concerned groups may possibly attend the hearings.
The Senate earlier conducted hearings, resulting in an agreement to create a sugar industry consultative committee./WDJ
