Speaking at the annual Carabao-Carroza Festival, which celebrates the carabao and their contribution to farming, Pavia Mayor Michael Gorriceta discussed the dwindling farming sector in the town, once a major agricultural area.
He pointed out, the town has three barangays containing agricultural land, with Barangays Cabugao Norte, Pagsanga-an, and Tigum designated by the Special Agri-Fisheries Development Code as “agricultural zones.”
Over the years, many real estate companies have purchased land in the town, accommodating the growing workforce in neighboring Iloilo City, which depleted land that was once used for agriculture.
Also taking place was the annual carabao race, which Gorriceta said pays homage to the old farming practices./WDJ
