Diocese of Bacolod Bishop Patricio Buzon used his Easter message to condemn extrajudicial killings and called the proposed restoration of the death penalty “utterly indefensible.”
Given the stated positions, he described the current state of the nation as “sad.”
“How sad it is to see this life so easily violated and trivialized,” he wrote.
Buzon said Jesus’ death is a testament to “how precious life is.”
Back in December of last year, Buzon appealed to lay people of the Catholic church, in particular lawmakers, to pray the death penalty not be reinstated.
At the time, he also called the state of Philippine politics “sad.”
“We’ve gone backwards,” the bishop declared. “The culture of death is with us.”/WDJ
