Abang Lingkod Party-list Rep. Stephen Paduano labeled the impeachment complaint filed by Magdalo Party-list Rep. Gary Alejano as “politics.”
“Impeachment, as a legal process to unseat a sitting government official, is all politics,” he stated. “Those who push for this process, for sure, have their own political agenda.”
Paduano believes one of the primary motives behind the call for impeachment is merely the desire for attention from the international community.
“The move to impeach is a step forward in receiving international attention, especially from the ICC (International Criminal Court), to take a look and do something about alleged human rights violations or crimes committed by this government,” he said.
Paduano, however, noted the likely failure of the measure.
“At the end of the day, it’s still a numbers game,” he added.
Alejano, on the other hand, is not giving up, explaining the 54 votes cast against the death penalty were “unexpected.”
“They should not be too confident of their numbers because that is not cast in stone,” he said in a recent radio interview.
“I cannot rate the chances of the impeachment, but we are working on it,” Alejano added./WDJ
