Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr. said, yesterday, his party, United Negros Alliance (UNegA), has no plans for the next polls yet, scheduled in 2019.
Marañon said he is not keen on the matter and would rather not delve in its politics.
“We still have a lot of things to do,” the governor said. “Politics is envious, destructive and retrogressive.”
He also denied endorsing Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo Benitez for governor when he was interviewed earlier this week.
Marañon added, if Benitez declares his intention to run for governor, then they will decide if they will endorse him.
However, Marañon did admit that Benitez is “one of the good bets” for governor, adding he works hard and his many connections will have a positive effect on the province.
Both Marañon and Benitez, who belong to separate local parties but the same national party, are serving their last terms in office as governor and congressman, respectively.
Benitez, meanwhile, admitted he is being urged to run for governor, although he said he hasn’t decided on the matter.
Before the 2016 elections, Benitez had also been endorsed by Marañon and the members of the Visayan bloc in Congress to run for senator, but opted to seek re-election as congressman.
“I would rather focus on what more needs to be done in my district,” Benitez added./WDJ
