Gilas Pilipinas’ turnover woes proved too much to overcome as it absorbed a 49-92 beatdown from Australia to close the third window of the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers at RAC Arena in Perth.

The Justin Brownlee-less nationals will head into the second round with just two wins in six matches after committing 19 turnovers, which the Boomers converted into 30 points.

No Filipino finished in twin digits, with Dwight Ramos leading Gilas with nine points, four rebounds and three assists.

June Mar Fajardo had eight points, eight rebounds and two blocks, while Mike Phillips provided spark with six points, 12 rebounds and a steal.

The game was close early, with both teams tied at eight before World No. 6 Australia unleashed 16 straight points to build a 24-8 lead at the 3:01 mark of the first quarter.

Gilas responded in the second quarter, holding the Boomers to just eight points on two field goals and trimming the deficit to 12. But the home side quickly regained control after the break.

Australia stretched its lead to as many as 43 in the second half as Gilas continued to struggle with ball security, cruising to its sixth straight win in as many games to complete a perfect first-round campaign.

Despite the loss, the Philippines will enter the next round as the third seed in Group A.

Gilas will look to bounce back in its next two games, which are expected to be held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

The Philippines will face Jordan and Iran in late August, according to the tournament’s official website.

Iran and Jordan finished the first round as the top two seeds in Group C, respectively, with both teams recording five wins in six matches.

Meanwhile, the hot-shooting Boomers were led by Bryce Cotton, who scored 21 points and knocked down five of Australia’s 11 three-pointers.

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Tyrese Proctor added 16 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Mitch Creek and Josh Bannan chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively. (ABS-CBN News)
