The Negros Occidental Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) has confirmed sporadic cases of pig deaths in several localities, as it urges hog raisers to immediately report sick animals for proper assessment and laboratory testing.
PVO chief Dr. Placeda Lemana said yesterday that the PVO has already distributed disinfectants and lime to affected hog raisers and advised them to properly bury dead pigs to help prevent the possible spread of disease.
Lemana also called on farmers to coordinate with their respective barangay officials or local veterinary offices before disposing of dead animals so that samples can be collected to determine the exact cause of death.
She noted that the PVO was unable to obtain samples from some reported cases because the dead pigs had already been buried, while surviving pigs were immediately disposed of by their owners.
According to Lemana, hog raisers should immediately contact their local veterinary office if their pigs begin showing signs of illness to allow authorities to respond promptly and conduct the necessary tests.
Based on reports from veterinary technicians and field personnel, affected pigs have exhibited symptoms including fever, colds and insect bites.
However, Lemana declined to identify any specific disease affecting the animals, emphasizing that laboratory testing is necessary before any conclusions can be made.
The PVO continues to monitor the situation and is reminding hog raisers to observe proper biosecurity measures and cooperate with local authorities to help determine the cause of the reported pig deaths and prevent further losses./CCJ, WDJ
