As the Philippines marked its 128th Independence Day yesterday, labor advocate Wennie Sancho emphasized the importance of remembering the country’s struggle for freedom while encouraging Filipinos to uphold unity and national identity amid ongoing political debates.

In a statement released yesterday, Sancho said the annual celebration serves as a reminder of the nation’s declaration of independence in 1898 and the sacrifices made by Filipinos to achieve self-determination and sovereignty.

“Independence is not granted; it is gained by the people through struggle,” Sancho said.

He noted that the observance goes beyond ceremonies and patriotic symbols, stressing that the concept of “Kalayaan” should also be reflected in everyday life through accessible public services, stronger communities and resilience in the face of challenges, including recent disasters such as the recent 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Mindanao.

Sancho said Independence Day programs across the country highlight collective sacrifice and the shared history that binds Filipinos together, urging citizens to take pride in the freedom won by previous generations.

The labor advocate also expressed concern that political disagreements in the Senate have shifted public attention away from issues that require immediate action.

He pointed out the contrast between the spirit of unity celebrated on Independence Day and the divisions often seen in political discussions.

At the same time, Sancho acknowledged that Independence Day speeches and media coverage frequently become venues for political messaging, with leaders highlighting accomplishments or criticizing opponents.

He said such debates are part of a democratic society but should not overshadow the deeper meaning of the national holiday.

Sancho said the true significance of June 12 lies in honoring the sacrifices of the past while allowing the Filipino people to shape the nation’s future through informed judgment and collective action./CCJ, WDJ
