National University (NU) will continue to rely on Negrenses Shaira Jardio and Myrtle Escanlar as the Lady Bulldogs retain much of their core for the UAAP Season 89 women’s volleyball tournament.

Jardio committed to return for her fifth and final season after emerging as one of NU’s top performers in Season 88.

The veteran libero anchored the Lady Bulldogs’ floor defense and was later named Best Libero of the season.

“A tough Season 88 but still a season filled with gratitude, growth and unforgettable memories. Maraming salamat NU community for the unwavering support and love. We’ll be back stronger next season,” Jardio said in an Instagram post.

Escanlar will also stay with NU for another campaign after providing steady contributions off the bench throughout Season 88.

Also returning for their final year are team captain Evangeline Alinsug, as well as middle blockers Chamy Maaya and Alexa Mata.

The Lady Bulldogs reached the finals in Season 88 but settled for runner-up honors after De La Salle University Lady Spikers completed a tournament sweep en route to the championship.

The Lady Bulldogs entered the season in transition following the departure of key players Mhicaela Belen, Alyssa Solomon, Sheena Toring, and Erin Pangilinan, who formed the core of the team’s previous title runs.

Despite the roster changes, the Lady Bulldogs remained competitive behind the efforts of Alinsug, Jardio, Negrense hitter Arah Panique, rookie Sam Cantada, and its returning veterans.

Setter Camilla Lamina was the lone Lady Bulldog who exhausted her playing eligibility, with Abe Pono expected to take over the primary playmaking role moving forward./ASC, WDJ
