Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson condemned the chaotic incident and reported gunfire inside the Senate during the tense standoff involving Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, describing the situation as “embarrassing and shameful” for the country.

“What happened there — the disorder and the firing of weapons — must be fully investigated,” Lacson said.

He said the disorder that unfolded inside the Senate tarnished the institution’s credibility and projected a negative image while the public and international audience were closely monitoring developments.

The provincial governor also raised suspicions that the gunfire incident may have been “staged” to advance political interests, stressing the need for authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the events.

According to Lacson, incidents of violence and disorder inside one of the country’s highest legislative institutions undermine public confidence in government and damage the dignity of the Senate.

He likewise expressed hope that the Senate would eventually regain stability and return to its legislative duties under its new leadership, particularly following the formal transmittal of the articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte.

Meanwhile, Negros Occidental 3rd District Representative Javier Miguel Benitez also voiced concern over the incident, saying disorder inside government institutions weakens public trust.

On the impeachment proceedings, Benitez said he remains confident that the Senate will conduct the process fairly, transparently and in accordance with the Constitution.

“We trust that the proceedings will uphold the rule of law and be conducted solely for the best interest of the Filipino people,” Benitez said while urging the public to remain calm and allow legal processes to proceed properly./CJ, WDJ
