Bacolod City has opened a night market in the downtown area to help local sellers earn more income amid the rising cost of living.

A schedule released by the city government yesterday showed that street stalls will be set up daily from 4:30 p.m. to midnight during the week.

“The launch of the Bacolod Night Market has introduced a timely economic boost for the city’s small vendors,” it said in a statement.

According to the city government, the initiative provides a much-needed venue for local sellers to stabilize their income and sustain their livelihoods amid rising costs.

Almost 90 stalls sell food, household goods, souvenirs, and used clothing.

The night market operates from Monday to Thursday, running from 4:30 p.m. until midnight in the plaza parking areas on Gatuslao and Gonzaga Streets. On weekends, Friday through Sunday, the market extends along Gonzaga Street.

The vendors lauded the opening of the market, citing Mayor Greg Gasataya’s support in helping them provide for their families.

City Ordinance No. 08-14-666 establishes the policies and guidelines for the establishment and regulation of night markets in the city.

A few months ago, the city government set up an experimental night market along Araneta Street from 6:30 p.m. to midnight on December 12 to 14, December 19 to 21, and December 24 to 31.

It continued from January 1 to 4, followed by a final schedule from January 9 to 11.

The ordinance provides that the designated night marketplaces are officially declared locations, which may be government lands or portions of roads or streets that are legally and temporarily closed to vehicular traffic.

Also, the night market location can be expanded, relocated, or transferred by the local government as needed. (PNA)
