The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) reminded public and private motorists to observe discipline and keep their cool during the expected exodus of Holy Week travelers beginning Maundy Thursday, April 2.
In a statement, LTFRB Chair Vigor Mendoza II said public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers are responsible for the safety of their passengers and must exercise maximum restraint to avoid unnecessary conflict.
“Learn from the lessons of road rage incidents in the past. Wala itong na-ibubungang maganda at sisirain lang nito ang araw niyo,” Mendoza said.
To date, the LTFRB has granted special permits to almost 1,300 passenger buses to address the anticipated large number of commuters during the period.
He ordered all LTFRB regional directors to intensify inspections of passenger buses and other PUVs to ensure road safety.
Aside from vehicle roadworthiness, these inspections will assess the mental and physical condition of bus drivers.
“Remember that Holy Week is also a time for reflection. And one of the best ways to observe Semana Santa is to exercise discipline and self-control in times of any incident that challenges your character,” he said.
He called on transport companies and other PUV operators to speak to their drivers and remind them to observe road safety rules and regulations, especially to avoid road rage.
Holy Week is an annual religious Christian observance that begins on Palm Sunday and ends on Easter Sunday.
Both Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are regular holidays, while Black Saturday is a special (non-working) holiday in the country. (PNA)
