Negros Occidental 2nd District Representative Alfredo Marañon III has called on the national government to accelerate the implementation of infrastructure projects, citing delays that could affect economic growth.

Marañon raised concern that as of March, bidding for several national government projects has yet to begin, a slowdown compared to previous years when procurement activities were already underway as early as January.

He said the delay was relayed to him by an official from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

According to the lawmaker, the lag in project rollout has been partly attributed to issues surrounding flood control initiatives, which have affected the broader implementation of infrastructure programs.

Marañon emphasized that infrastructure spending plays a critical role in driving economic activity, noting that such projects create jobs and stimulate multiple sectors, including construction and retail.

“These projects involve millions of pesos and generate employment for workers, while also boosting businesses that supply construction materials,” he said, stressing the multiplier effect on the local economy.

Marañon added that increased government spending is necessary to stimulate economic activity, particularly by ensuring the circulation of funds through public infrastructure investments.

Alongside his call for faster implementation, Marañon reiterated his push for the completion of the Bacolod – Negros Occidental Economic Highway (BANOCEH) extension project, a key road network aimed at improving connectivity in northern Negros Occidental.

The BANOCEH extension is designed to link the cities of Sagay to Victorias, passing through Cadiz City and Manapla town.

Once completed, it is expected to ease congestion along existing highways, reduce travel time and open new opportunities for business development along the corridor.

The DPWH has earmarked P400 million for the project, with Marañon seeking additional funding for 2026 to ensure its continued development.

The infrastructure initiative, which started several years ago, is targeted for completion by 2029.

Marañon expressed optimism that the project will significantly enhance mobility and economic opportunities across northern Negros Occidental once finished./CJ, WDJ
