Three years after the assassination of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo, his widow, 3rd District Representative Janice Degamo renewed her call for justice, urging authorities to deliver a decisive verdict not only for her family but also for all victims of political violence.
Speaking after a Mass commemorating the third death anniversary of the slain governor on Wednesday, March 4, Degamo acknowledged government efforts in bringing the alleged mastermind back to the Philippines, but stressed that accountability remains incomplete.
“But more than imprisonment, we have been waiting for justice to be fully served for three years,” Degamo said.
She expressed hope that the case would reach a resolution comparable to the landmark convictions in the Maguindanao massacre case, which she cited as a benchmark for justice in high-profile political killings.
“This is not only about my husband,” she said.
“This is also for the nine others who were killed with him. We are duty-bound to seek justice for the dead, no matter how long it takes or what people say,” she added.
Degamo also appealed to the people of Negros Oriental to remain vigilant and discerning, warning that community awareness and responsible decision-making are critical in preventing similar tragedies.
In a separate social media post, Degamo remembered her husband as a principled and compassionate public servant whose legacy was defined by service rather than position.
She vowed to continue advocating for a province free from fear, violence and corruption, saying his vision “must live on.”
Governor Degamo and nine others were killed in a brazen gun attack at his residence in Pamplona town on March 4, 2023.
Former Negros Oriental representative Arnolfo Teves, Jr. has been tagged by authorities as the alleged mastermind, an accusation he has repeatedly denied.
Teves was repatriated to the Philippines from Timor-Leste in May 2025, reviving public attention on the long-running case and renewing calls from the Degamo family for a swift and fair resolution./CJ, WDJ
