Salarzon tallies double-double in Ateneo’s win

Negrense Jian Salarzon delivered a standout all-around performance to power the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles past the De La Salle University Green Spikers in a hard-fought 25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 20-25, 15-13 victory in the UAAP Season 88 men’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, March 1.

The star finished with 17 points and anchored Ateneo’s floor defense with 21 excellent receptions, providing stability on both offense and serve receive as the Blue Eagles survived a fierce comeback attempt by their rivals.

Ateneo looked poised for a straight-sets win after dominating the first two frames, but La Salle responded with strong performances in the third and fourth sets to force a decider.

With momentum shifting to the Green Spikers, Salarzon stepped up in crucial moments of the fifth set, helping Ateneo regain control and close out the match.

Amil Pacinio led the Blue Eagles in scoring with 18 points and added 13 excellent digs, while reigning Most Valuable Player Kennedy Batas contributed 16 points on 12 attacks, two blocks and two service aces.

The victory allowed Ateneo to improve to a 2-2 record, while La Salle remained winless through four matches.

Meanwhile, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses delivered a dominant performance on its home floor, sweeping the University of the East Lady Warriors, 25-11, 25-14, 25-14.

Negrense Cassie Carballo orchestrated the offense with 13 excellent sets while also contributing five points to be named Player of the Game as the Golden Tigresses improved to a 2-2 win-loss slate.

Angeline Poyos led UST with 11 points built on eight attacks, two blocks and one service ace, while Jonna Perdido delivered her best outing of the season, finishing with 10 points along with six excellent digs and four excellent receptions.

Khy Cepada led the Lady Warriors with nine points, while also contributing four excellent digs and two excellent receptions as they dropped to 0-4 for the season./ASC, WDJ
