The Negros Occidental provincial government has taken a major step toward long-term disaster risk reduction after designating an 8.6-hectare property in La Castellana town’s Barangay Talaptap as a permanent relocation site for residents living within the four- to six-kilometer danger zone of Kanlaon Volcano.
The development was confirmed by Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz, who said Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson has already signed the deed of donation for the property.
The transfer will be finalized once La Castellana Mayor Añejo Nicor affixes his signature, allowing the land to be officially registered under the municipality.
Provincial officials said the relocation site is intended to provide a safe, stable and permanent settlement for families repeatedly displaced by Kanlaon’s volcanic activity.
By moving communities out of high-risk zones, the province aims to minimize recurring evacuations that disrupt livelihoods, schooling and access to basic services.
“This is a proactive solution that addresses not only immediate safety concerns but also the long-term welfare of affected residents,” provincial officials noted, adding that the project aligns with the province’s flagship development thrust, Abanse Negrense, which prioritizes public safety and resilience.
The provincial government said it will work closely with the local government of La Castellana to develop the site into a livable community, complete with essential facilities and services for relocated families./CJ, WDJ
