Office of Civil Defense (OCD) administrator, Undersecretary Harold Cabreros, yesterday called on the public, especially those residing in the Eastern Visayas and Bicol Regions, to take the necessary precautions amid the heavy rains and storms brought about by the arrival of Tropical Storm “Ada” (international name “Nokaen”), the country’s first tropical cyclone for this year.

“We urge the public to stay vigilant, follow the guidance of authorities, and monitor weather updates from reliable sources,” Cabreros said in a statement.

He made this appeal after noting that “Ada” is currently affecting many parts of the country, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Cabreros also said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecasts that “Ada” may make landfall over the Eastern Visayas and Bicol Regions.

“Localities outside the potential landfall area may still experience heavy rainfall and severe winds, according to the weather bureau,” the OCD chief added.

In anticipation of “Ada’s” possible effects, Cabreros said various government agencies, including the OCD, have conducted Pre-Disaster Risk Assessments and activated preparedness measures in anticipation of the tropical cyclone’s impact.

“Given the ongoing unrest of Mayon Volcano in Albay, additional measures are needed, as ‘Ada’ may exacerbate the emergency situation in the province,” he said.

Likewise, Cabreros said government units in affected areas have been alerted to implement necessary actions immediately.
