The Negros Occidental disaster office advised residents near Kanlaon Volcano to remain alert for possible ashfall yesterday after the volcano emitted ash twice in the morning.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office issued the caution following ash emissions around 10:09 a.m. and 11:31 a.m. directed southwest. These follow three ash emission events recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Sunday, January 11.

Kanlaon Volcano remains under Alert Level 2, indicating a moderate level of unrest with possible sudden phreatic eruptions. Phivolcs prohibits entry within the four-kilometer permanent danger zone.

The Department of Health in Negros Island Region reminded residents to wear masks, close doors and windows, and stay hydrated if ashfall occurs.

The volcano’s initial explosive eruption in June 2024 and subsequent activity mainly affected Bago City, La Carlota City, La Castellana town and Canlaon City. (PNA)
