Negrense Alexandra Eala surged to the semifinal round of the ASB Classic women’s singles event after a 6-3, 6-2 straight set win over Magda Linette in the quarterfinal round in Auckland, New Zealand yesterday.

The 20-year-old Negrense tennis sensation, who is ranked fourth in the tournament, needed just one hour and 37 minutes to close out the fifth seed Polish veteran at Center Court.

Eala capitalized on key moments despite being outgunned in aces, finishing with none compared to Linette’s three.

The Negros Occidental’s Victorias City native made the most of her opportunities on return, converting four of 13 break points for a 30.8 percent success rate.

Linette managed only two breaks from seven chances.

Eala also edged Linette in total points won, 62-53, highlighted by her efficiency on first-serve points, where she won 66.7 percent compared to Linette’s 51.6 percent.

Eala landed 61 percent of her first serves and won 24 of 36 points behind them, giving her a steady platform throughout the match.

On defense, Eala showed resilience by saving five of seven break points faced, good for a 71.4 percent save rate, while Linette saved nine of 13.

Eala also proved sharper on first-serve returns, winning 48.4 percent of those points compared to Linette’s 33.3 percent.

Both players committed two double faults, but Eala’s consistency in longer rallies and stronger overall return game allowed her to dictate play, particularly in the second set where she broke Linette twice to seal the win.

With the straight-set triumph, Eala booked a spot in the semifinals of the WTA tournament against Chinese Wang Xinyu, who reached the Final 4 round with an injury from her quarterfinal foe Francesca Jones./ASC, WDJ
